SAMWU Declares, Every Municipality an Apartheid Israel Free Zone!

SAMWU PRESS STATEMENT.
04 June 2010.

At its Central Executive Committee (CEC) meeting Friday 4th June, SAMWU unanimously endorsed a motion to immediately work towards every municipality in South Africa to become an Apartheid Israel free zone.

As part of the global Boycott, Disinvestment and Sanctions Campaign (BDS) SAMWU has agreed to engage every single municipality to ensure that there are no commercial, academic, cultural, sporting or other linkages whatsoever with the Israeli regime. Every SAMWU branch will immediately approach municipal and water authorities to become part of the BDS campaign, and to publicly declare their solidarity with the Palestinian people.

This decision was taken in response to the appalling actions of the Israeli regime against the Palestinian people, and especially the recent military intervention against the peace flotilla that aimed to deliver humanitarian aid to the besieged people of Gaza.

The SAMWU CEC congratulated the ANC Government for exercising diplomatic pressure on the Israeli regime but urged Government to take further steps to isolate the regime until there is a genuine independent democratic state for all the people of Palestine.

SAMWU pledged its active support to the Coalition for a Free Palestine (CFP), and also congratulated its sister union SATAWU for refusing to handle Israeli goods at the ports.

Finally the CEC urged all unions and civil society organisations to join in this crucial campaign, to take whatever action they can to further isolate Israeli Apartheid, and to be a positive part of the solution to the terrible humanitarian catastrophe that faces the Palestinian people.

Palestinians welcome South Africa recall of ambassador

Issued by the Coalition for a Free Palestine
3 June 2010

The Coalition for a Free Palestine, as well as numerous Palestinians and Palestinian civil society organisations that we are in touch with, welcome the announcement by South Africa’s Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ebrahim Ebrahim, of the recall of South Africa’s ambassador from Tel Aviv. The action was taken in protest against Israel’s murderous attack on unarmed civilians in an aid flotilla sailing in international waters.

The recall by the South African government – as well as similar actions by other countries such as Sweden, Spain and Turkey – are an indication to the Apartheid Israeli regime that the world is no longer willing to tolerate its brutal impunity and terrorism. The regime’s repeated violations of international law and United Nations resolutions make a mockery of the notion of international law. That it has not, for the past six decades, been forced to comply with the decisions of the international community in respect of its gross human rights violations, war crimes and crimes against humanity is a serious blight on the members of the United Nations. Even when Israel attacked unarmed civilians in open waters, the United Nations Security Council could only issue a presidential statement which did not even condemn Israel for its piracy.

Deputy Minister Ebrahim’s comments today are the clearest indication that South Africa’s patience with the Israeli regime is running out. As President Zuma indicated in a radio interview yesterday that if any other country had undertaken action like the attack on the aid flotilla except for Israel it would be regarded as a pariah. We call on local people of Jewish faith not to allow the South African Zionist Federation to speak on their behalf, by attempting to obscure the truth with outright lies and hopeful fables. No excuses, no lies, no attempts at obscuring the truth will fool the people of the world.

We are appreciative of the actions of our government over the past four days in expressing condemnation of Israel, issuing the Israeli ambassador with a demarche, recalling our ambassador from Israel, and the genuine concern and comfort they have extended to both Khadija Davids and her family.

Nevertheless, as appreciative as we are, we still remain committed in calling on our government to:

1. Expel the Israeli ambassador from South Africa;
2. Break all diplomatic ties with Israel;
3. Cut all economic and trade ties with Israel, in response to the call for boycotts, divestment and sanctions from over 200 Palestinian organisations;
4. Shut down Mossad and Shin Bet operations and terminating the business dealings of El Al Airlines in South Africa;
5. Actively promote an academic boycott of Israel by ensuring that all academic links with Israel by our tertiary institutions and research organisations are severed immediately;
6. Prosecute all South African citizens who serve in the Israeli armed forces, as is required by the Regulation of Foreign Military Assistance Act, and;
7. Ensure that Israeli war criminals will be prosecuted if they enter South Africa – as is South Africa’s obligation under the Rome Statute.

South Africans will not be fooled by the lies that are now being told by the South African Zionist Federation on behalf of the Israeli apartheid state and on behalf of the Israeli military which was responsible for the heinous crimes on Monday. As a country that has experienced the Sharpeville, June 16th, Langa, and many other apartheid massacres, we have heard all these lies and guilt-soothing excuses – heavily armed soldiers fearing for their lives from activists wielding knives, or stones, or slings, etc. We did not believe the apartheid regime then; South Africans will not believe these recycled lies today.

We demand that the Egyptian government keeps the Rafah Crossing open indefinitely to allow free access to and the Gaza strip.

We commit ourselves to mobilise our trade union members to organise active campaigns to isolate Israel by refusing to handle goods to and from Israel. In this regard, we salute the workers of the South African Transport and Allied Workers Union who today decided that, in the light of Israeli piracy, they will not allow any Israeli ship to unload goods at South African ports.

Activities around the country will continue in protest against Israel and its murderous actions. A mass protest rally will take place in Soweto on Saturday at the well-known protest venue, Uncle Tom’s Hall and the campaign to deepen the South African boycotts, divestment and sanctions campaign against Israel will be intensified.

SATAWU Condemns the Israeli Act of International Piracy

The South African Transport and Allied Workers Union condemns the attack on aid ships launched by the Israeli state. This last act of Israeli state sponsored murder left nine people dead and many others injured.

The attack which took place in international waters is nothing less than an act of international piracy.

The ships were carrying aid to the beleaguered peoples of in Gaza. This attack and Israel’s continued closure of the border has worsened the appalling conditions that those who live in Gaza are forced to endure.

We salute the Swedish dock workers for their blockade of all Israeli ships.

We call for an escalation of the boycott of Israeli goods and call upon our fellow trade unionists not to handle them.

We call upon our members not to allow any Israeli ship to dock or unload in any South African port.

Whilst welcoming the recall of the South African Ambassador to Israel we demand that our government now cut all diplomatic ties with this murderous regime.

We welcome the worldwide condemnation of this act of piracy but note with alarm the failure of the American government once again to take decisive action against Israel.

We condemn and reject their call for an internal enquiry into the events and call upon the American Government to take this opportunity to reverse its support for Israel all other repressive regimes in the Middle East.

We reaffirm our support for Palestinian national sovereignty and demand the immediate withdrawal of Israel from all occupied territory.

Please contact the General Secretary, Zenzo Mahlangu @ 072 613 1332 for further comments.

SA Withdraws its Ambassador to Israel

South Africa will recall its ambassador to Israel following a deadly attack on a vessel attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza, Deputy International Relations Minister Ebrahim Ebrahim said on Thursday.

However, government had no intention of expelling the Israeli ambassador to South Africa or of cutting diplomatic ties with that community.

"The recall of ambassador Ishmael Coovadia is to show our strongest condemnation of the attack. This recent Israel aggression of attacking the aid flotilla severely impacts on finding a lasting solution to the problems of the region," Ebrahim told journalists in Pretoria.

Nine people were killed during Monday's raid in international waters.

South Africa had already added its voice to the increasing international condemnation of Israel's actions and had since summoned the Israeli ambassador to a meeting.

"The SA government also joins the international community in its call for the siege of Gaza to be immediately lifted," said Ebrahim adding that the siege had brought "untold hardships" to the ordinary people of Gaza.

"It has made their lives nightmarish."

Ebrahim said that government welcomed the decision by Egypt to open the Rafa border crossing between it and Palestinian-controlled Rafah. - Sapa

Al Quds SA Press Statement: Israeli Occupation forces attack on freedom flotilla

31 May 2010
Al-Quds Foundation SA hereby condemns the brutal attack on the aid-carrying freedom flotilla early this morning by the Israeli Occupation Forces, in which 16 people were killed and more than 30 injured, in international waters - a direct violation of international law. We further condemn the use of military force (helicopters, military boats surrounding the flotilla) and live ammunition against innocent, peaceful civilians.

We are appalled at the blatant disregard by Israel for the lives of the people on board the flotilla, for international laws barring such behaviour and for the many human rights violations that they have committed. We are, however, not shocked by Israeli behaviour as past actions prove that Israel has no respect for the law and even less so for human life as they continue to subject the Palestinians, especially in the Gaza, to the most inhumane oppression and occupation.

Furthermore we wish to state that we support the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, the Turkish Foreign Ministry and Hamas leader, Ismail Haniyeh in their condemnation of the attacks.

We call on the South African government and the Department of Foreign Affairs to relook at South Africa’s ties with the racist, oppressive Israeli regime and take cognizance of the fact that this ‘state’ once supported Apartheid in South Africa. We are insulting and shaming our forefathers by continuing to support Israel and its many human rights abuses and violations. Their atrocities know no bounds and can no longer be denied or overlooked. We further call on the South African government to expel the Israeli ambassador from our country to ensure that our sovereignty not be tarnished by their illegal actions.

We also call upon the international regulatory bodies to hold Israel accountable for these and all other atrocities committed. Lastly, we offer our sincere condolences to the bereaved families of the victims and a speedy recovery to the wounded.

COSATU condemns Israeli state piracy

May 31, 2010 -- The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) is outraged at the murder by Israeli commandos' of at least 20 people -- and injuries to a further 60 -- as a result of their armed attack on a convoy of ships carrying aid to the people of Gaza last night.

COSATU sends its condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives and calls upon the people of the world to condemn this act of Israeli state-sponsored piracy.

The six-ship flotilla, with 750 Palestine solidarity activists from around the world on board and carrying 10,000 tonnes of aid for the people of Gaza, left Cyprus on Sunday and had been due to arrive in Gaza today.

Then, when it was about 64 km out to sea, in international waters, Israeli armed forces boarded the largest vessel and fought with those on board. The activists say Israeli troops came on board shooting. Israel is now reported to be towing the boats to the port of Ashdod and says it will deport the passengers from there.
The ships were bringing the people of Gaza 10,000 tonnes of badly needed concrete, toys, workbooks, chocolate, pasta and substantial medical supplies. It was acting in accordance with international law.

COSATU fully supports the call on the international community to pressure their governments to condemn this brutal deed and hold Israel accountable for the murder of foreign civilians at sea and illegal piracy of civilian vessels carrying humanitarian aid.

The federation welcomes the decision by the government of Spain and Sweden to withdraw their ambassadors from Israel and calls upon the South African government to follow their lead.

The flotilla was an international response to the plight of the people of Gaza, following Israel's closure of the border. Amnesty International in their Annual Human Rights Report concluded that the siege has "deepened the ongoing humanitarian crisis. Mass unemployment, extreme poverty, food insecurity and food price rises caused by shortages left four out of five Gazans dependent on humanitarian aid. The scope of the blockade and statements made by Israeli officials about its purpose showed that it was being imposed as a form of collective punishment of Gazans, a flagrant violation of international law."

The United Nations has continuously stated that only a fraction of the required aid is entering Gaza due to what it calls "the medieval siege". John Ging, the director of UNRWA in Gaza, has specifically expressed the need for the flotilla to enter Gaza.
The European Union's new foreign affairs minister, Catherine Ashton, has just reiterated its call for, "an immediate, sustained and unconditional opening of crossings for the flow of humanitarian aid, commercial goods and persons to and from Gaza".

COSATU also calls for greater support for the international boycott, divestment and sanction campaign against Israel, which is proving again to be violent and ruthless in attacking and murdering those who stand in its way. We urge all South Africans to refuse to buy or handle any goods from Israel or have any dealings with Israeli businesses.

COSATU reaffirms its support of the inalienable right of the Palestinian people to national sovereignty and the same human rights as any other people. We demand the immediate end to the Israeli siege and the illegal occupation of the sovereign territory which has been violently seized from the Palestinian nation.
Issued by Patrick Craven (national spokesperson), Congress of South African Trade Unions.

Tutu condemns Israel aid-boat attack

Anglican Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu and a group of retired global leaders have joined international leaders in condemning the Israeli forces' raid on a ship delivering relief supplies to Gaza.

"We as elders condemn Israel utterly for this attack. The actions of the Israelis is inexcusable," said Tutu.

He was speaking at the conclusion of a meeting of the group formed in 2008 to highlight humanitarian issues. Members include former UN secretary general Kofi Annan and former US president Jimmy Carter.

Reading a statement, Tutu said the Elders wanted an urgent investigation into the "tragic incident" after Israeli forces boarded the Mavi Marmara as it sailed with a flotilla to Gaza.

He said it should draw the world's attention to the "terrible suffering of Gaza's 1.5 million people, half of whom are children under the age of 18".

The Elders considered Israel's blockage of Gaza illegal collective punishment of its inhabitants and said it was also counterproductive.

"This is because it creates unacceptable suffering, in the process empowering extremists and undermining moderate forces in Gaza", they said.

On Monday morning Israeli forces boarded one of the ships which was violating Israel's blockade on certain goods entering the contested area. Israel warned last week that it would arrest those on board.

News reports said that at least 10 people were killed.

The Israeli Defence Force has said that they had tried to intercept the ships to search them, but were then fired on and attacked with knives and clubs.
Ten civilians were killed and four navy staff were among those injured.
The soldiers had been given full backing by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, according to Associated Press.

South Africa's foreign office said it was trying to establish whether there was a South African on board the ship during the attack, which it said should get the "highest level of international condemnation".

The Congress of SA Trade Unions called the incident "state sponsored piracy" and urged a boycott of Israeli products, while the SA Municipal Workers' Union issued a statement on behalf of a large group of civil society organisations calling it a "massacre".

"The convoy of ships was carrying 750 people from 40 different countries including 35 international politicians, members of parliament, former diplomats, human rights activists, aid workers and journalists and was destined for the Gaza port of Rafah later this afternoon.

"The flotilla carried essential aid material, such as medication, construction material, toys, workbooks, chocolate and pasta to Gaza," which the organisations said were banned by Israel.

They said South Africa should immediately recall its ambassador to the capital Tel Aviv, expel the Israeli ambassador in South Africa, and sever diplomatic ties with Israel.

The organisations represented in the statement included the Palestine Solidarity Committee and the Muslim Judicial Council.

Civil Society Statement on Israeli attacks on aid ships to Gaza

Representatives from unemployed people’s movements and organisations, trade unions and other civil society organisations meeting to discuss the economic crisis, unemployment and strategies for decent work in a national seminar hosted by the Alternative Information and Development Centre (AIDC) on Monday 31 suspended their discussions to condemn Israel’s attack on a flotilla of aid boats heading for besieged GAZA in occupied Palestine.

While we anxiously await on more details, especially the situation of our comrade Gadijah Davids, a journalist with community radio station Radio 786, we condemn this attach as a form of state terrorism. This barbaric act reminds us of the atrocities carried out by the apartheid government in Southern Africa. We call on our government to immediately to expel the Israeli ambassador from SA as a first step towards isolating Israel’s apartheid state.

Adopted unanimously, River Club 31 May 2010

Welcome Actions by South African Government in Response to Israeli Killings

Issued by the Coalition for a Free Palestine
2 June 2010

The Coalition for a Free Palestine welcomes recent actions by the South African government in responding to the murderous attack by Israeli soldiers on unarmed civilians in an aid convoy to Gaza.

Since the Israeli attack early Monday morning, the South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) issued a statement condemning the illegal attack – which was unlawful under international law and which resulted in the murder of at least nine civilians. Yesterday, Deputy Minister Sue van der Merwe summoned the Israeli ambassador and issued him with a demarche for the action of his government. Further, this morning, President Jacob Zuma expressed his outrage at the Israeli murderous brutality. He also criticised those countries who have taken a soft attitude towards Israel. Zuma said that if any other country had committed the same crime as Israel, there were would have been much stronger action taken by the international community.

The CFP welcomes these strong and harsh statements by the South African government.

Further the CFP in expressing the displeasure of South Africans regarding the terrorist actions of Israel, in particular, calls on our government immediately to:

Recall our ambassador to Tel Aviv, as has been done by a number countries, such as Sweden, Spain, and Turkey;
Expel the Israeli ambassador from South Africa;
Break all diplomatic ties with Israel;
Cut all economic and trade ties with Israel, in response to the call for boycotts, divestment and sanctions from over 200 Palestinian organisations;
Shut down Mossad and Shin Bet operations and terminate the business dealings of El Al Airlines in South Africa;
Actively promote an academic boycott of Israel by ensuring that all academic links with Israel by our tertiary institutions and research organisations are severed immediately;
Prosecute all South African citizens who serves in the Israeli armed forces, as is required by the Regulation of Foreign Military Assistance Act, and;
Ensure that Israeli war criminals will be prosecuted if they enter South Africa – as is South Africa’s obligation under the Rome Statute.

We also call on trade unions locally and globally to mobilise their members to organise active campaigns to isolate Israel by refusing to handle goods to and from Israel. In this regard we call on the ITUC and the ITF to provide leadership to promote the call for an international general strike against Israel.

We demand that the Egyptian government keeps the Rafah Crossing open indefinitely to allow free access to and the Gaza strip.

Activities around the country will continue in protest against Israel and its murderous actions. The 24-hour picket outside the office of DIRCO in Pretoria, which began last night, will continue until 20:00 today. A march will take place in Cape Town tomorrow, and rally in Soweto on Saturday. These are among a number of protest activities across South Africa over the next few days.

South Africa summons Israeli Ambassador in South Africa following Israeli attacks on aid ships to Gaza

1 June 2010

South African Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ms Sue van der Merwe, in the absence of Minister Ms Maite Nkoana-Mashabane, who is on an official visit to France, summoned the Israeli Ambassador in South Africa, Mr Segev-Steinberg.

The reason for the meeting was to issue a Démarche, registering the governments’ strongest possible protest to the Israeli Government, for its unjustified military action and resultant loss of life inflicted by Israel on a flotilla of ships carrying humanitarian relief supplies to Gaza.

Deputy Minister van der Merwe expressed the governments’ deep regret at the loss of life and reiterated that this military attack against civilian activists is totally unacceptable and clearly a case of disproportionate use of force.

She further stated that such a military attack was an aberration from acceptable behaviour on the part of a State party in dealing with civilians and that Israel must be held accountable for its actions under international law. In this regard, the South African government also supported a full investigation into the matter which should be prompt, impartial, credible and transparent, as well as conforming to international standards.

The government also requested the immediate release of the ships, as well as civilians held by Israel, including one South African citizen and for Israel to allow the countries concerned to retrieve their deceased and wounded and to ensure the delivery of humanitarian assistance from the convoy to its destination.

Mass Meeting for Gaza (PSA): June 2nd

Date:Wednesday, June 2, 2010
Time:7:30pm - 9:30pm
Location:Baitun Noor Hall
Street:Topaz Street
City/Town:Lenasia, South Africa

In light of Israel's attack on the flotilla carrying humanitarian assistance and in a bid to break the illegal siege of Gaza, the PSA will be hosting a rally. We need to step up efforts to mobilise civil society to pressurise our government to respond effectively. Twenty lives were lost and nearly 50 people seriously injured. Join us in a show of solidarity as we call on our government to take immediate action and to reaffirm the boycott, divestment, sanctions (BDS) campaign against the Apartheid state of Israel.

NUM Condemns Israel, Calls for Independent Inquiry

The National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) is enraged by the callous and murderous actions of the Israeli naval commandos when they raided a Turkish led international humanitarian envoy to the Israeli blockaded Hamas ruled Gaza Palestinian territory. The pro-Palestinian flotilla led boat, the Turkish Marmora, with 600 mixed nationals activists aboard, was violently intercepted by the Israeli commandos resulting in the death of 19 reported deaths.

The NUM is concerned that the latest action of the state of Israel threatens the peace process and the realization of a two state solution to the Israeli - Palestine conflict. These callous and barbaric actions amount to a violation of international law because the incident took place 80 miles out to sea in international waters and has increased tensions and threats of armed retaliatory conflict along the Mediterranean peninsula.

While the NUM supports the UN Security Council's call for Israel to conduct a prompt, impartial, credible and transparent investigation of the flotilla incident and condemning of the Israeli acts of violence and the immediate release of ships and civilians held by Israel, we do not believe that Israel is capable to conduct such an investigation. We instead call for an international, independent inquiry under the auspices of a United Nations agency and a consideration for sanctions to be imposed against Israel upon an adverse finding of the investigation against Israel.

"We applaud the bold diplomatic action by Spain to recall its ambassador and call upon nation states to do the same as a sign of protest against the action of the Israeli State. We also call upon the international community to demand the lifting of the blockade" says Senzeni Zokwana,the NUM President and President of the 20 million member International Chemical, Energy, Mining and General Workers Union (ICEM).

SACP Statement on the Murderous Israeli Aggression SACP statement on the murderous Israeli aggression against the Gaza Freedom Flotilla

2 June 2010

The SACP condemns in the strongest possible terms the criminal and murderous acts of aggression against a peaceful Gaza Freedom Flotilla, bound for the besieged Gaza to deliver much needed aid.

The criminal massacre perpetrated by Israeli military forces against the humanitarian aid mission destined for Palestine, carrying about ten thousand tons of necessity goods in the face of the calamitous humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, a result of the illegal blockade upon this territory and its people, came under attack from the Israeli navy, where peace- activists were brutally killed.

The attack against the humanitarian convoy constitutes a flagrant and shocking violation of the most basic rules of international law, an act of piracy and a further proof of the terrorist policy of a State that has relied upon the complicity and support of the USA and the European Union.

Given this serious event, the SACP demands that our government should in no uncertain terms repudiate apartheid Israeli and condemn these latest acts of aggression. A condemnation that, in the framework of Portuguese foreign policy and Portugal's participation in the diverse international institutions, gives Israel no immunity and derives from this event all the political, diplomatic and foreign relations consequences regarding the State of Israel.

SACP reiterates its unequivocal support of the Palestinian people in their struggle for establishment of the Palestinian State along the pre-1967 borders with its capital in Jerusalem, and appeals to the South African people and progressive organizations within the solidarity and peace movements, with the Palestinian people to express their disgust and indignation and condemnation against this additional heinous act of the Israeli government and its military forces.

Israel Condemned

CEDRIC MBOYISA and SAPA

31 May 2010

JOHANNESBURG - Israel has been widely condemned for its deadly attack on a six-ship flotilla carrying aid to the people of Gaza yesterday.

The South African government, the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu), the Esteemed Elders Group, the African Union and the Coalition for a Free Palestine were united in their criticism of Israel.

Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu said: “We, as Elders, condemn Israel utterly for this attack. The actions of the Israelis are inexcusable.”

The Elders Group includes members such as former UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan and former US President Jimmy Carter.

Tutu said the Elders wanted an urgent investigation into the “tragic incident” after Israeli forces boarded the Mavi Marmara (an international humanitarian aid boat) as it sailed with a flotilla to Gaza.

The government said it condemned all military aggression by Israel against innocent civilians including those in the occupied West Bank and Gaza.

“South Africa notes with the gravest concern reports that Israeli forces have attacked a flotilla of ships carrying aid to Gaza and that there are casualties following the attack.

“The convoy was on a peaceful mission and the ships were not armed. For Israel to attack these civilian ships in international waters is a gross violation of international law and is deserving of the highest level of international condemnation.”

The African Union said it was “deeply shocked” by the deadly raid.

Cosatu called on the South African government to withdraw its ambassadors from Israel. It also called for the boycott of Israeli goods.

“Cosatu also calls for greater support for the international boycott, divestment and sanction campaign against Israel which is proving again to be violent and ruthless in attacking and murdering those who stand in its way. The ships were bringing the people of Gaza 10 000 tons of badly-needed concrete, toys, workbooks, chocolate, pasta and substantial medical supplies.

“It was acting in accordance with international law,” said spokesman Patrick Craven.

But the Israeli Defence Force has said it had tried to intercept the ships to search them, but were then fired on and attacked with knives and clubs.

AFP says the soldiers had been given full backing by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The Coalition for a Free Palestine says Israeli troops killed at least 19 civilians of the aid convoy and injured dozens more.

“The attack was a direct violation of international law and reflects the Israelis’ arrogant and flagrant disregard for law and human rights.

“The convoy of ships was carrying 750 people from 40 different countries including 35 international politicians, members of parliament, former diplomats, human rights activists, aid workers and journalists and was destined for the Gaza port of Rafah,” it said.

The coalition enjoys the backing of Cosatu, Samwu, the Palestine Solidarity Committee, the Palestine Solidarity Group, the Palestine Solidarity Alliance, the Muslim Judicial Council and the Muslim Youth Movement.

The SA Zionist Federation said accusations against Israel were without foundation.

“Israel fulfilled the tenets of international law by warning these ships repeatedly of the existence of the maritime blockade off the coast of Gaza.

“The federation strongly condemns the distorted and overt media bias which, yet again, has ignored the role of terrorist group Hamas and its supporters who promote violence and aggression under the guise of humanitarian activity in favour of damning Israel based solely on one-sided, prejudicial and fallacious information.”

Time To Act Is Now: MJC

The Muslim Judicial Council (MJC) is calling on the people of Cape Town to stand up, take action and show their disapproval of the latest Israeli attack on an aid flotilla that was headed for the Gaza Strip late on Sunday. Sheikh Ebrahim Gabriels of the MJC described the attack that took place in the early hours of Monday morning as "a very sad state of affairs".

A six ship flotilla was en route to deliver 10 tonnes of aid to Gaza when they were intercepted by Israeli navy forces who in turn said they had thought the 750 activists on board the Freedom Flotilla were transporting arms and ammunition to Palestine. The death toll of the attack is standing at 20 while scores have been left injured.

"We are asking our people to wake up and to stand up," said Gabriels. "At least some of the European countries like Italy, Switzerland, Spain and Greece have pulled back their embassies from Israel." Gabriels further said that the MJC has already put in a request at the South African government to do the same.

"The South Africa government is supposed to be the first in line because they were the second last apartheid state. We are expecting South Africa to do that but we are still waiting," said Gabriels, criticizing the government for not expelling the Israeli ambassador yet.

Urgent meeting

"We have decided one of the things that we are going to do is write to the South African government appealing them and asking them also for an urgent meeting," explained Gabriels. "And I hope that they are going to respond." Gabriels has applauded that the Israeli embassy in Turkey "is under siege", just as the Gaza Strip is under siege by Israel.

Gabriels has also pleaded with the rest of the community, whether they be Muslim or not, to write to the government as well. "You can also write to the office of the government and the office of the president and saying we were expecting South Africa to do something ... So write to the government. Send your faxes, send your emails and insha Allah, Allah will bring relieve to the people of Gaza and Palestine."

The senior member of the MJC further said that the public should not wait on their religious leaders to take protest action. However, it is the responsibility of each and every human being to show Israel just how dissatisfied they are with their attacks on the people of Palestine. According to Gabriels, already on Monday, the day of the attack, a big march in London took place and on Tuesday a marches in different cities in Australia was held.

Interfaith

Gabriels said that religious leaders in various areas across the city were not "involved, not coming forward". "The imams must also now come forward and do something with all the jamaats. It's unnecessary when we call a march and there's only 10,000 people, and that's because the leaders of the masaajid are not involved. Please come forward to the MJC so that we can decide," added Gabriels. "I think this is a very crucial moment for the Palestinian cause that has happened yesterday in international waters."

The alim also criticised international bodies such as the United Nations for not sending troops to Palestine to fight off the Israeli forces. "When it comes to Burundi and Congo and these poor countries then you see all the forces of the UN. They are filling up the capital of Burundi but when it comes to Palestine, it's double standards," he said.

"The UN is doing nothing. And it's impossible to believe that it's their responsibility to look after all human beings in the world, but it seems if something happens to the Palestinians or to any Muslims in this world then the UN is silent." VOC (Faatimah Hendricks)

SA Demands Israel Release Journalist

The government has summoned the Israeli ambassador to demand the release of a South African journalist held after a raid on a ship in Israel on Monday.

South Africa's deputy minister of international relations, Sue van der Merwe, summoned Israeli ambassador Dov Segev-Steinberg to register the government's "strongest possible protest" to the Israeli government, after an attack on the ship, the Mavi Marmara on Monday morning.

The ship was part of a flotilla of six ships with over 700 people on board, which was trying to deliver aid to the Gaza strip.

The Mavi Marmara was boarded after it refused to stop and be searched.

A South African journalist, Gadija Davids from Cape Town based radio station, Radio 786, was on board the ship and was apparently held by the Israeli Defence Force (IDF). She was not harmed in the attack.

Call for investigation
South Africa demanded a full investigation into the incident, said Van der Merwe in a statement issued by the department.

"A full investigation into the matter which should be prompt, impartial, credible and transparent, as well as conforming to international standards," she said.

"The government also requests the immediate release of the ships, as well as civilians held by Israel, including one South African citizen and for Israel to allow the countries concerned to retrieve their deceased and wounded."

Van der Merwe called the military action by the IDF "unjustified".

South African Civil Society Outraged at Israeli Massacre

Issued by the Coalition for a Free Palestine

31 May 2010

The undermentioned civil society organisations, including the Palestine solidarity movement in South Africa, the South African Council of Churches, and the Muslim Judicial Council, are outraged by the massacre committed by Israeli forces this morning, in flagrant violation of international maritime law.

At 04:30 this morning, in international waters, Israeli navy commandos invaded an international humanitarian aid boat, Mavi Marmara, which was part of an aid flotilla travelling to the Gaza Strip. The troops fired on unarmed civilians, killing at least 19 civilians and injuring dozens more. The attack was a direct violation of international law and reflects the Israelis' arrogant and flagrant disregard for law and human rights. Israel's actions are not only a breach of international law, but a violation of all that is decent, an act of murder and terrorism.

The convoy of ships was carrying 750 people from 40 different countries including 35 international politicians, members of parliament, former diplomats, human rights activists, aid workers and journalists and was destined for the Gaza port of Rafah later this afternoon. The flotilla carried essential aid material, such as medication, construction material, toys, workbooks, chocolate and pasta to Gaza. The entry of all these materials into Gaza has been banned by Israel. It is widely accepted that Israel's imposition of the four-year long siege on the Gaza strip is a crime against humanity. This view is supported by the recent UN Report by South African Judge, Richard Goldstone. According to the UN, Israel's Operation Cast Lead in January 2009 damaged or destroyed at least 11,000 houses, 105 factories, 20 hospitals and clinics, and 159 schools, universities, play schools and technical institutions. Further, 1,400 people were killed, some 51,800 were displaced, and 20,000 remain homeless to this day because Israel will not allow construction material into the besieged territory.

By sailing directly to Gaza, outside of Israeli waters, the flotilla was attempting to break the siege which is in violation of Article 33 of the Geneva Convention which clearly states that collective punishment is a crime against humanity.

We reject with contempt the propagandist Israeli claim that the passengers of the ship, part of AN "armada of hate" as Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister called it, was carrying supporters of "global jihad, al-Qaeda". These are lies meant to divert attention from the fact that Israeli soldiers opened fire on unarmed civilians in international waters.

South Africans will from today be joining the call to demonstrate support for the courageous women and men on the flotilla and to mourn the loss of those murdered on their humanitarian aid mission. We demand that, until Israel acts in accordance with international law, releases all political prisoners, and lifts the siege on Gaza, the South African government:

* immediately recalls the South African ambassador to Tel Aviv;

* expels the Israeli ambassador back to Israel;

* sever all diplomatic relations with Israel;

* support the international campaign of boycotts, divestment and sanctions against the Apartheid Israeli state; and

* works tirelessly in international fora to ensure that the inhuman and illegal siege on Gaza be lifted.

Krengel Issues Statement on Behalf of SAZF

31 May 2010
Avrom Krengel, Chairman of the South African Zionist Federation

The seizure of the Gaza Flotilla has resulted in widespread accusations against Israel which have absolutely no foundation but which are instead based only on sensationalism and propaganda aimed at delegitimizing Israel in the basest manner.

The Hamas regime controlling Gaza is determined to continue attacking Israel with whatever means it has at its disposal. Under international law Israel has the right to defend and protect her citizens from Hamas attacks, and has thus imposed a maritime blockade to curb further Hamas aggression. Under international maritime law, when a maritime blockade is in effect, no vessels can enter the blockaded area.

Israel fulfilled the tenets of international law by warning these ships repeatedly of the existence of this maritime blockade off the coast of Gaza. At the same time, based on the assumption that the boats in the flotilla were carrying humanitarian aid for the citizens of Gaza, Israel offered them the opportunity to land in the Israeli port of Ashdod and to offload the aid, under their scrutiny, which would then be transferred to Gaza through the existing overland crossings.

However on 27 May, Greta Berlin, one of the flotilla organizers, made the following statement to AFP: "This mission is not about delivering humanitarian supplies, it's about breaking Israel's siege."

The organizers claim to want to bring humanitarian assistance to Gaza; yet at no time has any such offer been made to or about Gilad Shalit, the young Israeli soldier captured 4 years ago by Hamas and since then denied every opportunity either to be visited by the Red Cross or to be in contact with his family.

When it became clear that the organizers refused to change direction towards Ashdod, thus violating the Israeli blockade, Israeli naval personnel had no option but to board the illegally sited vessels. A helicopter landed on the deck of one of the boats, and the Israelis who disembarked were immediately attacked and their weapons forcibly removed. Confronted by protestors with weapons as well as by a man carrying an infant in his arms - in what he called a "message" to any Israelis planning to act against the flotilla but which cannot but be construed as anything other than child abuse - the Israeli naval personnel were well within their rights to take action against their attackers. 10 Israeli soldiers were injured in the incident, of whom one suffered a serious head injury, two others were injured by gunshots and another was stabbed.

The vessels have now been redirected to Ashdod, where the humanitarian aid will be transferred to Gaza according to standard operating procedures.

The SA Zionist Federation strongly condemns the distorted and overt media bias which yet again has ignored the role of terrorist group Hamas and its supporters who promote violence and aggression under the guise of humanitarian activity in favour of damning Israel based solely on one-sided, prejudicial and fallacious information.

South African Government Condemns the Israeli Attacks on Aid Ships to Gaza

Pretoria - South Africa notes with the gravest concern reports that Israeli forces have attacked a flotilla of ships carrying aid to Gaza and that there are casualties following the attack. South Africa accordingly strongly condemns this action which reportedly took place in international waters, 65 km off the coast of Gaza, in the early hours of Monday 31 May 2010.

Media reports indicate that the convoy was carrying 10 000 tonnes of aid to the beleaguered people of Gaza. The convoy was on a peaceful mission and the ships were not armed. For Israel to attack these civilian ships in international water is a gross violation of international law and is deserving of the highest level of international condemnation.

The Department of International Relations & Cooperation is in urgent contact with our Missions in Tel Aviv, Ramallah and Ankara, where some of the ships originated, in order to obtain more information on the attacks.

Unconfirmed media reports indicate that between 10 and 16 persons were reportedly killed or injured. The Department is also investigating the possibility that there was a South African citizen on board one of the ships.

South Africa strongly condemns all military aggression by Israel against innocent civilians, including those in the occupied West Bank and Gaza. South Africa also strongly criticized the Israeli invasion of Gaza in December 2008 and January 2009 and has consistently urged the Israeli Government to lift its subsequent siege of Gaza. It is this siege which has caused untold hardships for the ordinary people of Gaza and which prompted the international community to organise such relief efforts to the territory and therefore Israel stands solely responsible for the loss of life during this action.

South Africa would also like to recall the recent Goldstone report which was highly critical of Israel in the carrying out its military actions in Gaza with the resultant loss of life of innocent civilians.

Again, South Africa calls for a concerted international effort to bring about a broader solution to the question of Palestine, which will ultimately contribute to the establishment of peace in the region.

South Africa also trusts that the international community will not leave this latest act of provocation on the part of Israel unresolved due to the seriousness of this action, which took place in international waters and which involved citizens from across the globe.

COSATU Condemns Israeli State Piracy

Cosatu
31 May 2010

Union federation outraged at murder of at least twenty people

The Congress of South African Trade Unions is outraged at the murder by Israeli commandos' of at least twenty people - and injuries to a further 60 - as a result of their armed attack on a convoy of ships carrying aid to the people of Gaza last night, 30 May 2010.

The United Nations has continuously stated that only a fraction of the required aid is entering Gaza due to what it calls ‘the medieval siege'. John Ging, the Director of UNRWA in Gaza, has specifically expressed the need for the flotilla to enter Gaza.

The European Union's new foreign affairs minister, Catherine Ashton, has just reiterated its call for, "an immediate, sustained and unconditional opening of crossings for the flow of humanitarian aid, commercial goods and persons to and from Gaza."

Statement issued by Patrick Craven, COSATU national spokesperson, May 31 2010
